A child, walking all alone,
    Dm                           G                                    C             Em7   Am
Wearing ragged clothes, with hair uncombed,
  Dm     G                  C      Em7   Am   Dm   G    walk up
A child with no home.
                                 2.

I saw there in the road,

A mother, with a tear in her eye,

For the son she loved

Who had to fight and die,

A mother with a tear in her eye.

                                 3.

I saw there in the road,

A little dog, so faithful, so true,

Looking for his master’s heel,

Waiting for his master’s call,

A call that would never come.

                         4. I saw there in the road,

A girl, left so alone,

With a love that had grown,

For the boy who had to go,

A broken heart she’ll always know.

                                   5.

I see there in the road,

A boy, lying face in the sand;

Who fell along the way

To a promised land.

For eternity, a face unknown!
